On Tuesday, February 11th, at approximately 11:45 am at Midsouth Packers Establishment M47028, IPP observed a humane handling noncompliance during routine slaughter of cattle. The animal was restrained in the kill box, the operator shot the firearm to render the steer unconscious. The steer did not go down, backed up and stood there with his head down, still conscious, but did not vocalize. Immediately the establishment employee took corrective action by delivering another shot that immediately rendered the steer unconscious. A tag was placed on the kill box until the veterinarian gave IPP permission to take it off. After the tag was taken off, slaughter of the rest of the cows proceeded. This noncompliance is a violation of regulation 313.16 (a) (1). On post mortem inspection it was confirmed there were two points of entry into the steer’s skull.
