On Tuesday 8/22/23 at approximately 1405 hours, I, the CSI, was on duty at Genuine Meats, Est. M47521 performing a Livestock Humane Handling Task. I was at the rear of the establishment observing unloading of swine. I observed a producer, who was unloading his own swine, placed the sole of his boot on a pigs rump and pushed the pig off the trailer with his foot. The trailer was approximately 18” off the ground. The pig grunted and landed on the ground on his feet. This is noncompliant with 9 CFR 313.2 regulations. There was no ramp in place for the pig to walk down off the trailer. The pig did not appear injured. An establishment employee was present at the time. No regulatory control action was taken, due to the producer not having any further animals to unload. I verbally notified the establishment management, REDACTED, of the forthcoming noncompliance. The District Veterinary Medical Specialist was notified. There are no noncompliance records for the same root cause within the past 90 days. This establishment operates under a robust systematic approach to the humane handling of livestock.

On Monday 12/20/22 at approximately 0750 I conducted an antemortem inspection of sheep scheduled for harvest at Genuine Meats, est. M47251. I observed seven sheep in pen 1A and four sheep in pen 2A. Neither pen has a constant water system. Both pens had a water bucket inside the pen, however both water buckets were frozen over. This is a violation of CFR 313.2e requiring animals to have access to water. Plant manager REDACTED will be notified in person of this noncompliance.
