Based on the US Census Vintage data estimates, in 2023, there were 1,145,915 people that identified as Non-Hispanic Black or African American alone in Tennessee and they represented 16.08% of the total population of Tennessee in 2023. Shelby County had the highest number of Non-Hispanic Black or African American alone population (485,368), followed by Davidson County (180,813), and Hamilton County (67,392). On the other hand, Pickett County had the lowest number of Non-Hispanic Black or African American alone (19), followed by Hancock County (51), and Van Buren County (62).

When it comes to the percentage of each county's population that identified as Non-Hispanic Black or African American alone, Shelby County had the highest percentage (53.34%), followed by Haywood County (50.55%), and Hardeman County (41.1%).
