Based on the US Census Vintage data estimates, in 2020, the Black or African American Alone population in South Dakota was 21,496 and represented 2.42% of the total South Dakota population (887,852).

Among South Dakota counties, Minnehaha County had the highest number of people who identified as Black or African American Alone (12,936), followed by Pennington County (1,545), and Lincoln County (1,264). Jones County had the lowest (3).
