United States Hate Crime Incidents By Bias Type in 1999

According to the FBI UCR data, in 1999, there were 7,940 hate crime incidents in the US. Anti-Black or African American bias was the highest motivation for hate crime incidents (2,989), which was 37.65% of the number of incidents. Anti-Jewish bias was the second highest motivation for hate crime incidents (1,113), which was 14.02% of the number of incidents. And Anti-Gay (Male) bias was the third highest motivation for hate crime incidents (924), which was 11.64% of the number of incidents.

The chart below shows the percentage of hate crime incidents for the top 10 biases. The table below shows both the number of hate crime incidents and the percentage of the total number of incidents for the different bias types.

NB: Hate Crimes are criminal offenses that were motivated, in whole or in part, by the offender's bias against the victim's race/ethnicity/ancestry, gender, gender identity, religion, disability, or sexual orientation, and were committed against persons, property, or society. A hate crime incident can be motivated by one or more biases.
